Perth is a fantastic starting point. Australia's most isolated capital city has transformed into a world-class food and bar destination, with small bars, rooftop restaurants, and a waterfront that rivals any in the country. Rottnest Island is a short ferry ride from Fremantle and home to the irresistible quokkas — the happiest animal on Earth and the original selfie star.
Heading south, Margaret River is a region that punches well above its weight. World-class surf breaks, over 200 wineries, craft breweries, spectacular limestone caves, and some of the tallest trees on Earth (the Boranup Karri Forest). Many travellers describe Margaret River as the highlight of their entire Australian trip.
Esperance and the south coast are home to beaches so white and water so turquoise that they look digitally enhanced. Lucky Bay is famous for kangaroos that lounge on the sand right beside sunbathers. Cape Le Grand National Park offers bushwalking trails with jaw-dropping coastal views.
Further north, Ningaloo Reef near Exmouth and Coral Bay offers whale shark swimming (March to July), manta ray encounters, and shore snorkelling over pristine coral that starts just metres from the beach. Unlike the Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo is remarkably accessible and far less commercialised.
The Kimberley region and Broome at the top of the West Coast represent the final frontier of Australian travel. Cable Beach's 22-kilometre stretch of white sand against a blazing red sunset is an image that defines Western Australia. Camel rides along the beach at sunset are a classic experience.
Getting around the West Coast typically requires a combination of tours and self-drive. Distances are vast — Perth to Broome is over 2,200 kilometres — but our packages coordinate transport and activities so you can cover the highlights without the logistical headache. The best time to visit the northern West Coast is the dry season (May to October), while the south is pleasant year-round.
