About Cairns & Port Douglas

The ultimate gateway to adventure where the Daintree Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkel vibrant coral gardens, raft the Tully River rapids, and soar over the rainforest canopy on the Skyrail.

Cairns is the adventure capital of North Queensland and the primary gateway to the Great Barrier Reef — the world's largest coral reef system and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. For most East Coast travellers, Cairns is the grand finale of their journey and it doesn't disappoint.

The Great Barrier Reef is the main draw. Dundee Adventure offers day trips to the outer reef where the coral is most vibrant and the marine life is incredible — expect to swim with sea turtles, giant clams, reef sharks, and thousands of species of tropical fish. Both snorkelling and introductory diving options are available, with no experience needed.

Beyond the reef, Cairns is surrounded by ancient Daintree Rainforest — the oldest tropical rainforest in the world at 180 million years old. Take the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway for aerial views over the canopy, or join a guided walk through the forest floor to spot cassowaries, tree kangaroos, and giant pythons.

For adrenaline junkies, Cairns delivers white water rafting on the Tully River (grade 3-4 rapids), bungee jumping at AJ Hackett, and skydiving over the reef. Port Douglas, a charming village 70km north of Cairns, offers a more relaxed atmosphere with boutique dining and closer access to the reef.

Cairns has a tropical climate — warm and humid year-round. The dry season (May–October) offers the clearest reef visibility and most comfortable temperatures. Stinger season (November–May) means you'll need a stinger suit for swimming, which all tour operators provide.

Travel Information

Best Time to Visit

May to October (dry season) for the best reef visibility and comfortable weather. June to August is peak season with the most tour options running.

Getting There

Cairns Airport (CNS) has domestic flights from all major Australian cities and some international routes. 20 minutes from the city centre by shuttle.

Local Tip

If you can only do one reef trip, choose the outer reef over inner reef — the coral is healthier, more colourful, and the marine life is far more abundant.
