The Visa You Need (in Plain English)
For most gap-year travellers the answer is the Working Holiday visa. There are two versions and which one you get depends on your passport:
• Subclass 417 — for the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and several others. • Subclass 462 — for the USA and a different list of countries.
Either way it lets you live, travel and work in Australia for 12 months, and you can often extend to a second or third year. Good news on age: UK, Irish, French, Canadian, Italian and Danish citizens can apply up to age 35 (not 30), and as of 1 July 2026 German citizens can now apply up to 35 as well. You must apply before your 36th birthday and, for your first visa, from outside Australia.

What Does a Gap Year in Australia Actually Cost?

• Before you go: the working holiday visa, travel insurance, flights and gear. Australia asks you to show around AUD $5,000 in savings plus money for a flight home when you apply. • Day-to-day backpacking: most travellers spend roughly $70–120 AUD a day when they are actively touring — hostel bed, food, transport and the odd big activity. • When you settle to work: costs drop a lot once you are in a share house and earning. Rent, groceries and transport in a regional town are far cheaper than daily backpacking in Sydney.

When Should You Go?
Australia is a year-round destination, but the seasons are flipped from the northern hemisphere:
• May–September (winter down south, dry up north): the best window for Queensland, the reef, the Whitsundays and the Outback — warm, sunny, low humidity.
