Noosa & Sunshine Coast

Noosa is one of Australia's most beautiful coastal towns and the home base of Dundee Adventure Travel. Located on Queensland's Sunshine Coast about 140 km north of Brisbane, Noosa offers a rare combination of pristine beaches, national park wilderness, and one of only two Everglades systems in the world — all within a relaxed, upscale beach-town atmosphere. Unlike the high-rises of the Gold Coast, Noosa has strict building height limits, so the town stays low-rise, leafy, and tucked into the landscape.

Noosa National Park is the jewel of the Sunshine Coast and entry is completely free. The 4.5 km coastal walking track winds through headlands and hidden coves, passing Tea Tree Bay (a sheltered swimming and surfing spot), Granite Bay (clothing-optional), Fairy Pools (natural rock pools perfect for snorkelling at low tide), Alexandria Bay, and Hell's Gates at the far end — a dramatic rocky headland with crashing waves and panoramic views. The trail is one of the best places to spot wild koalas on the East Coast; look up into the eucalyptus canopy, especially in the early morning when they're active. During whale migration season (June to November), the headland lookouts double as prime humpback-watching points.

The Noosa Everglades is a hidden gem that most tourists miss entirely. Part of the Cooloola Section of the Great Sandy National Park, this pristine waterway is one of only two Everglades systems on Earth (the other is in Florida). Kayak through the "river of mirrors" — the water is so still it perfectly reflects the sky, creating a surreal, dreamlike landscape surrounded by untouched paperbark forest and tea-tree bush. Guided half-day kayak tours are available from Habitat Noosa and Kanu Kapers, typically running $80–$120 per person including equipment. For a more immersive experience, multi-day canoe-camping trips go deeper into the wilderness area. It's one of the most peaceful outdoor experiences in Australia and completely unique to this region.

Noosa Main Beach is one of the few north-facing beaches in Queensland, making it perfectly sheltered from the prevailing south-east winds and ideal for swimming year-round. Hastings Street runs right alongside it with boutiques, restaurants, and al-fresco cafes. For surfers, the break at First Point is legendary — one of the best longboard waves in Australia, with clean, peeling right-handers that work on any north or east swell. Sunshine Beach, just over the headland, offers more powerful waves and a wilder, less-crowded vibe.

Beyond the beach, the Sunshine Coast hinterland is minutes away. The Eumundi Markets (Wednesday and Saturday mornings) are among the largest artisan markets in Australia — over 600 stalls selling handmade jewellery, ceramics, local produce, and street food. The Glass House Mountains, a dramatic cluster of ancient volcanic peaks, offer excellent short hikes with rewarding summit views (Mount Ngungun is the most accessible at around 45 minutes return). The charming towns of Maleny and Montville in the Blackall Range have art galleries, cheese shops, and stunning escarpment views over the coast.

Getting to Noosa: Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) is just 25 minutes south of Noosa with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. Brisbane Airport is about 90 minutes by car, and shuttle services run several times daily. Greyhound buses stop at Noosa Junction on the Brisbane–Cairns route, making it an easy addition to any East Coast trip.

Best time to visit: Noosa is genuinely a year-round destination. Summer (December–February) brings warm temperatures around 28–30°C and afternoon storms that clear quickly. Winter (June–August) is dry and mild — daytime temperatures of 20–23°C with clear skies, plus whale watching season. September to November is the sweet spot: perfect weather, fewer crowds than the school holiday periods, and spring wildflowers in the hinterland.
