Working Holiday Visa Age 35: New 2026 Rules for Germany, South Korea, Finland & Cyprus

If you are in your early thirties and thought your window for a working holiday in Australia had closed, here is some very good news. From 1 July 2026, Australia raised the age limit for the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) from 30 to 35 (inclusive) for four more countries: Germany, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Finland and Cyprus.

That means citizens of those four countries can now apply right up until the day before their 36th birthday — a whole extra five years of eligibility. It brings them into line with the UK, Ireland, France, Canada, Italy and Denmark, who already enjoyed the higher age cap. This guide breaks down exactly what changed, who it affects and how to make the most of it.

The subclass 417 Working Holiday visa is now open to applicants aged 18 to 35 (inclusive) for citizens of:

• United Kingdom • Ireland • France • Canada • Italy • Denmark • Germany — new from 1 July 2026 • South Korea (Republic of Korea) — new from 1 July 2026 • Finland — new from 1 July 2026 • Cyprus — new from 1 July 2026

For all other subclass 417 countries the age range stays at 18 to 30. On the separate subclass 462 (Work and Holiday) program, the standard range remains 18 to 30 — with the United States the notable exception, also eligible up to 35.

Always confirm your own country's current rules on the official Department of Home Affairs website before you apply — programs and figures do change.

Alongside the higher age cap came a quieter but genuinely important fix: your age is now assessed at the moment you lodge your application, not when a decision is made.

Under the old rules, travellers who applied just under the cut-off could technically be refused if they had a birthday while their application sat in the queue. Now, as long as you are under 36 on the day you lodge, you meet the age requirement even if processing runs past your birthday.

The practical takeaway: if you are close to 36, lodge your application as early as you can. Age is locked in at lodgement, so getting your paperwork in sooner removes all the timing risk.

Two pots of money to plan for:

• The visa fee: as of July 2026 the first-year application charge is around AUD $840. Second and third-year visas carry their own separate fees. • Proof of funds: you generally need to show access to around AUD $5,000 in savings, plus enough for a return or onward flight, when you apply.

Those are the official minimums. In practice we would always suggest landing with a bit more of a buffer so you are not job-hunting under pressure in your first fortnight. Treat these as a 2026 guide only and confirm the live amounts on the official immigration website when you apply.

The working holiday visa is designed to let you fund your adventure as you go:

• Stay: live and travel in Australia for 12 months from first entry. • Work: for almost any employer, in almost any industry — hospitality, retail, farm work, events, construction and more. The usual limit is up to 6 months with any one employer. • Study: you can study or train for up to 4 months.

Backpacker work is genuinely easy to find in the busy seasons, and earning Aussie dollars is what makes a longer trip affordable. If you are in your thirties, you will often find your experience makes you *more* employable for the better-paid casual roles, not less.

Yes — the extension rules are the same regardless of your age:

• Second year: for most nationalities, complete 88 days (3 months) of specified work in regional Australia during your first year — typically farm work, mining, construction or fishing. • Third year: complete around 6 months of specified regional work during your second year.

One perk worth knowing: under the Australia–UK Free Trade Agreement, UK passport holders are exempt from the 88-day requirement and can roll into a second and third year without the regional work. For Germany, South Korea, Finland and Cyprus the standard specified-work rules apply.

You do not need to pay an agent. The application is done online, directly through the official Department of Home Affairs website, and it is designed to be straightforward:

1. Check your eligibility — passport country, age at lodgement, and no dependent children coming with you. 2. Create an ImmiAccount and complete the subclass 417 application online. 3. Upload your documents — passport, and any funds or character evidence requested. 4. Pay the fee and lodge — remember, your age is locked in the moment you lodge. 5. Apply from outside Australia — your first working holiday visa must be granted while you are offshore.

Once it is granted you have 12 months to make your first entry, and the 12-month clock starts from the day you arrive.
