Perth to Broome

Set off from Perth and spend 21 days winding your way up Western Australia’s wild west coast to Broome, with the road stretching ahead and a crew of new travel mates beside you. This is a shared camping adventure, so you’ll take turns driving, cooking and setting up camp while the coastline delivers the good stuff: long empty beaches, turquoise water and those red-cliff sunsets WA does so well.

As you head north, the scenery gets bigger and bluer, with time to swim, kayak and even snorkel with dolphins in the right spots. The highlight for many is Ningaloo Reef, where you can step straight off the beach and into clear water alive with coral and marine life. Inland, the trip shifts gears through the rust-coloured country of Karijini National Park and its dramatic gorges, with plenty of hiking, swimming holes and fresh air to work up an appetite. If you’re keen for a real road trip with a bit of grit, plenty of freedom and a proper taste of outback WA, this is the one to jump on.

Know before you go: - This is a self-drive shared minibus trip, not a guided tour, so you’ll be travelling with other guests rather than a dedicated guide. - Drivers must be 21 or older and hold a valid regular driver’s licence; non-drivers cannot take the wheel. - Pack light, with luggage limited to around 20 kg: one large bag plus one day bag or small backpack. - Bring your own sleeping bag, water bottle, sunscreen and torch, as these aren’t supplied. - Expect mostly free camping, with the option to stay at budget paid camps along the route. - The vehicle can’t be taken on 4WD-only roads, so stick to the recommended route and accessible stops.
