Top End & Kakadu Travel Guide 2026
Everything you need to plan a Top End trip — Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine — including when to go, how long to stay, what it costs and which tour suits you. Written by an Aussie team who book these trips every day.
The Top End is the tropical north of the Northern Territory, based around Darwin. Its headline national parks are Kakadu (rock art, wetlands, waterfalls), Litchfield (swimming holes and falls close to Darwin) and Katherine (Nitmiluk) Gorge. Most travellers explore on a 1 to 5-day 4WD safari or day tour from Darwin, timed for the dry season when the waterfalls and swimming holes are at their best.

When to go
The Top End has two seasons. The dry season (May-October) is prime time — blue skies, safe swimming holes, open tracks and waterfalls flowing. The wet season (November-April) is dramatic and green with thundering falls, but many tracks and plunge pools close and humidity is high. For most travellers, June to September is ideal.
How long to stay
You can taste Litchfield on a day tour from Darwin. Kakadu deserves at least 2 days; a 3-day Kakadu and Katherine safari is the sweet spot. Combine Litchfield, Kakadu and Katherine over 4-5 days for the full Top End.
Getting there
Fly into Darwin, the launch point for every Top End trip. Litchfield is about 1.5 hours drive south-west; Kakadu's entrance is around 2.5 hours east; Katherine is roughly 3 hours south.
Getting around
Distances are big and some sights need a high-clearance 4WD, so a guided tour or 4WD safari from Darwin is the easiest and safest way to see the parks — and it sorts park passes, swimming-hole safety and crocodile awareness for you.
Where to stay
Darwin has hostels, hotels and holiday parks and is the natural base. Multi-day safaris include camping or cabins inside or near the parks, so you wake up close to the falls.
What Does a Top End Trip Cost?
Prices move with season and inclusions, so we show live prices on each tour. As a planning guide, here's where the money goes:
| Litchfield or Kakadu day tour | Live price | Waterfalls, swimming holes or a wetlands croc cruise |
| 3-day Kakadu & Katherine safari | Live price | Camping or cabins, the sweet-spot Top End trip |
| Kakadu park pass | From ~$40 | Most multi-day tours include it — check inclusions |
| Crocodile cruise | Live price | Often bundled into day tours — brilliant value |
All tours booked through Dundee show live availability and a live price with instant confirmation and no hidden booking fees.
What to Pack for the Top End
- Swimmers and a quick-dry towel for the swimming holes
- Reef-safe sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
- Strong insect repellent
- Sturdy shoes that can get wet
- A refillable water bottle
- Light, breathable clothing — it's tropical year-round
Dundee Local Tip
Only swim where your guide or the signage says it's safe — this is saltwater crocodile country, and the designated plunge pools in Litchfield and Kakadu are checked, while rivers are not. Start early: the falls and swimming holes are magic (and cool) before the tour crowds arrive mid-morning. [Dundee team: replace or add your own first-hand tip here.]
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to visit Kakadu and the Top End?
The dry season, May to October, is best — safe swimming holes, open tracks and flowing waterfalls. June to September is ideal. The November-April wet season closes many tracks and pools.
Can you swim in Kakadu and Litchfield?
Yes, but only in designated, checked swimming holes — such as Litchfield's Florence, Wangi and Buley pools. Never swim in rivers or unmarked water; this is saltwater crocodile country.
How many days do you need in Kakadu?
At least two days for Kakadu alone. A 3-day tour combining Kakadu and Katherine, or Litchfield and Kakadu, is the most popular way to see the Top End.
Do you need a 4WD for the Top End?
Some of the best spots need a high-clearance 4WD and the wet season closes others. A guided safari from Darwin is the easiest way in and handles access, park passes and croc safety.
