Uluru & the Red Centre Travel Guide 2026
How to plan a trip to Uluru and Australia's Red Centre — when to go, how many days you need, how to get there, what it costs and which tour to pick. Written by an Aussie team who book these trips every day.
Uluru (Ayers Rock) sits in Australia's Red Centre, near the town of Yulara in the Northern Territory. Most travellers fly into Ayers Rock Airport (Yulara) or Alice Springs and see Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon on a 2 to 5-day camping safari or 4WD tour. Sunrise and sunset at the rock, the Field of Light, the Valley of the Winds walk at Kata Tjuta and the Kings Canyon rim walk are the highlights most trips are built around.

When to go
The Red Centre is a desert, so May to September (cooler, dry, clear nights) is the comfortable window for walking. December to February is extremely hot — walks close by late morning for safety. Winter nights get close to freezing, so pack layers even in the dry season.
How long to stay
You can see Uluru itself in a busy day, but the Red Centre rewards time. A 3-day tour covering Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon is the classic pick and the one our team recommends. Add a night in Alice Springs or the West MacDonnell Ranges if you have 4-5 days.
Getting there
Fly direct to Ayers Rock Airport (Yulara) for the shortest transfer to the rock, or into Alice Springs if you want to travel the full Red Centre by road. Most multi-day tours pick up from either Alice Springs or Yulara — check the tour before you book flights.
Getting around
Distances out here are huge and there is no public transport between the sights, so a guided tour or 4WD safari is by far the easiest (and usually cheapest once you factor in a hire car, fuel and park fees). If you self-drive, fuel up at every roadhouse and carry water.
Where to stay
All accommodation near the rock is at Yulara (Ayers Rock Resort) — from a campground to hotels. Multi-day camping safaris include swags or tents under the stars. Kings Canyon and Alice Springs have their own lodges if you are looping the Red Centre.
What Does an Uluru Trip Cost?
Tour prices move with season, departure point and inclusions, so we show live prices on each tour rather than a fixed figure. As a planning guide, here's where the money goes:
| Uluru day experience | Live price | Sunset viewing, base walks or a scenic flight |
| 3-day Red Centre safari | Live price | Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon with camping — the classic |
| National park pass | From ~$38 | 3-day Uluru-Kata Tjuta pass; most tours include it — check inclusions |
| Scenic flight / balloon | Live price | Optional add-on, worth it for the scale of the landscape |
All tours booked through Dundee show live availability and a live price with instant confirmation and no hidden booking fees.
What to Pack for the Red Centre
- Wide-brim hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen
- A fly net for your face (Sep-Nov especially)
- Warm layers and a beanie for cold desert nights
- Sturdy closed walking shoes
- A refillable water bottle — at least 2-3L per person per day
- A head torch for early sunrise starts and camp
Dundee Local Tip
Book the sunset viewing on your first evening and sunrise on the next morning — the rock changes colour completely between the two, and doing both is the thing people remember most. Do the harder walks (Valley of the Winds, Kings Canyon rim) as early in the day as you can before the heat builds. [Dundee team: replace or add your own first-hand tip here.]
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do you need at Uluru?
Two nights is the sweet spot for Uluru and Kata Tjuta with a sunset and a sunrise. Add a third day for Kings Canyon, which most 3-day Red Centre tours include.
Can you still climb Uluru?
No. The climb was permanently closed in October 2019 out of respect for the Anangu traditional owners. You explore on the base walk and at the Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon walks instead.
What's the best time of year to visit Uluru?
May to September — cooler days for walking and clear, starry nights. December to February is very hot and some walks close by mid-morning for safety.
Do I fly into Uluru or Alice Springs?
Ayers Rock Airport (Yulara) is closest to the rock. Alice Springs is about 4.5 hours drive away and is the better base if you want to see the West MacDonnell Ranges and travel the Red Centre by road.
