Uluru holds deep spiritual significance for the Anangu people, the traditional custodians of the land. Climbing Uluru was permanently closed in October 2019 out of respect for this sacred site. Instead, a 10.6-kilometre base walk takes you around the entire circumference of the rock, passing caves with ancient rock art, waterholes that sustain desert wildlife, and geological formations that reveal the rock's 500-million-year story.
Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), located around 25 kilometres from Uluru, is an equally spectacular formation of 36 massive red rock domes. The Valley of the Winds walk is one of the best hikes in the Northern Territory — a 7.4-kilometre loop through gorges, past lookout points, and between towering domes that feel almost cathedral-like. The Walpa Gorge walk is a shorter alternative for those who prefer a more relaxed experience.
Kings Canyon, around 300 kilometres northeast of Uluru, is typically included in 3-day and 5-day tours. The 6-kilometre rim walk is a genuine highlight — climbing to the canyon edge, walking through the weathered sandstone "Lost City," descending into the lush Garden of Eden (a permanent waterhole surrounded by ancient cycad palms), and enjoying panoramic desert views that stretch to the horizon in every direction.
The outback BBQ dinner is a signature experience on most tours. Sitting under a canopy of stars with a glass of Australian wine and a plate of bush tucker-inspired food, surrounded by the silence and vastness of the desert — it's one of those travel moments that stays with you for life.
