Whitsundays Island Hotspots

Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island is the top Whitsundays highlight and the main reason most travellers book a tour. Many itineraries include a Whitehaven Beach landing, with time to swim, relax on the silica sand, and take photos.

Hill Inlet is at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach and is known for the Hill Inlet Lookout walk. Tours that include Hill Inlet usually combine beach time + a guided or self-guided bushwalk to the viewpoint (tides and timing can affect access).

Airlie Beach vs Hamilton Island departures (choosing the best starting point for your Whitsundays tour). Best for: Airlie Beach Whitsundays tours, Hamilton Island day tours, and comparing departure points. Airlie Beach departures (Port of Airlie / Abel Point Marina) offer the widest range of Whitsundays day tours and overnight sailing trips and are ideal if you’re travelling via the mainland. Hamilton Island departures are the most convenient option if you’re staying on the island or flying into Hamilton Island Airport (HTI), with a more resort-style, streamlined start to your tour.

Best for: coral, fish, turtles, underwater photos
What to expect: Most Whitsundays tours snorkel fringing reefs around the islands (often places like Hook Island bays). These are typically not the Outer Great Barrier Reef, but still excellent for first-time snorkellers.

Whitsundays Sailing FAQs

Most Whitsundays tours depart from Airlie Beach (Port of Airlie / Abel Point Marina), with some options leaving from Hamilton Island.
To get here, you can:

  • Fly to Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine / PPP), then take a shuttle/bus (around 45–60 minutes) to Airlie Beach.
  • Fly to Hamilton Island (HTI) if your tour starts there (or connect to Airlie via ferry/transfer).
  • Take a coach/bus from major East Coast stops (e.g., Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Brisbane) if you’re travelling overland.
Once you’re in Airlie Beach, most operators have clear check-in instructions and you’ll walk or transfer to the marina.
The Whitsundays are great year-round, but the “best” time depends on what you care about most:

  • Dry season (roughly May–October): Typically milder temperatures, lower humidity, and popular conditions for sailing.
  • Warmer months (roughly November–April): Hotter water and weather, but higher humidity and a greater chance of tropical rain.
  • Peak periods: Australian school holidays and winter months can book out fast—lock in early if you want the best boats/cabins.
If you want the smoothest experience, aim for shoulder months when weather is still strong but crowds can be lighter.
Yes – seasickness is common and manageable, and you can still have an amazing trip.
  • Choose the right tour style: larger sailing catamarans and stable day boats are usually smoother than smaller vessels.
  • Consider a day tour if you’re unsure about an overnight.
  • Sit in the fresh air and focus on the horizon; avoid reading below deck.
  • Bring (or ask your pharmacist about) travel sickness tablets or ginger chews.
  • Let the crew know early—experienced crews can help with the best seating spots and timing.
If you’re very prone to seasickness, tell us what tour you’re looking at and I’ll recommend the most stable options.
The Whitsundays sit within the Great Barrier Reef region, but not every Whitsundays tour goes to the Outer Reef.

  • Many Whitsundays sailing and island tours focus on Whitehaven Beach, island lookouts, snorkelling fringing reefs, and protected bays.
  • If your priority is Outer Reef snorkelling/diving, you’ll want a tour that specifically lists Outer Reef sites (or consider dedicated Outer Reef trips from other departure points).
Best move: check the itinerary/snorkel locations listed on the tour page—if it doesn’t mention Outer Reef, assume it’s inshore/fringing reef snorkelling.
