About K'gari (Fraser Island) Tours
K'gari — formerly known as Fraser Island — is the world's largest sand island and one of Australia's most iconic adventure destinations. Located off the coast of Hervey Bay in Queensland, this World Heritage-listed island stretches 123 kilometres long and delivers landscapes so diverse they seem impossible on a single island.
Dundee Adventure's K'gari tours are the highlight of any East Coast trip. Our 2-day and 3-day 4WD tours take you to every must-see spot on the island: the crystal-clear waters of Lake McKenzie (one of the most photographed lakes in Australia), the ancient rainforest of Central Station, the coloured Pinnacles sandstone cliffs, Indian Head lookout, Eli Creek's flowing crystal waters, and the famous Maheno Shipwreck on 75 Mile Beach.
All tours include experienced local guides, comfortable accommodation, meals, 4WD transport, and all national park fees. Our small groups (max 20 people) ensure a personal experience and our guides share incredible knowledge about the island's ecology, Aboriginal heritage, and unique wildlife including dingoes, turtles, and migrating humpback whales (July-November).
K'gari tours depart from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach, both easily accessible from Brisbane, Noosa, or anywhere along the East Coast route.
Lake McKenzie is the star of any K'gari visit. A perched lake sitting above the water table with no rivers flowing in or out, it's filled entirely by rainwater filtered through centuries of sand. The result is water so pure and clear it appears electric blue against the bright white silica sand. Swimming here feels like something from a dream.
75 Mile Beach serves as both the main highway and runway on K'gari — 4WD vehicles and small planes share this vast stretch of hard-packed sand. Driving along the beach with the Pacific Ocean crashing beside you is an experience you won't find anywhere else in Australia. Along the way, stop at the Maheno Shipwreck (a former luxury liner that ran aground in 1935), Eli Creek (a crystal-clear freshwater creek where you can float downstream to the ocean), and Indian Head (a rocky headland offering panoramic views where you can often spot sharks, rays, turtles, and dolphins from above).
The island's interior is equally stunning. Ancient satinay and brush box rainforests grow directly from sand — the only place on Earth where tall rainforest grows on sand dunes at this elevation. Walking through these forests with a knowledgeable guide reveals a complex ecosystem that has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years.
K'gari is also home to the purest strain of dingoes in eastern Australia. These wild dogs are a protected species on the island and sightings are common, though strict guidelines exist to keep both visitors and dingoes safe. Your guide will brief you on dingo-safe practices before you arrive.
The best time to visit K'gari is year-round, though July to November adds the bonus of humpback whale migration visible from Indian Head and the beaches. Tours run in all weather, and even a rainy day on K'gari can be spectacular — the lakes and creeks are fed by that very rain, after all.
