When to go

K'gari is a year-round destination. August–October is the sweet spot — warm days, cool nights, dry tracks for 4WD and humpback whales offshore. September–January is the busiest and priciest, so book early. The January–March wet season is greener and quieter, but some tracks can close after heavy rain.

Getting there

The island is reached by vehicle ferry from Inskip Point (10 minutes from Rainbow Beach) or from River Heads near Hervey Bay. Tours include the ferry, so you just need to get yourself to the departure town — Rainbow Beach and Noosa are the handiest if you are travelling up the East Coast from Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast.

Getting around

There are no sealed roads on K'gari — everything runs on soft sand and 75 Mile Beach, so you need a high-clearance 4WD and tide awareness. Unless you are an experienced sand driver with the right permits, a guided or tag-along tour is far safer (and usually cheaper once you add up ferry, permits, fuel and camping gear).

If you are coming up from Noosa or Brisbane and time is tight, depart from Rainbow Beach rather than Hervey Bay — the Inskip Point ferry crossing is only about 10 minutes, so you spend more of your day on the island and less in transit. Is K'gari the same as Fraser Island?

Yes. Fraser Island was officially renamed K'gari in 2023 to honour its Butchulla Aboriginal heritage — K'gari means 'paradise' in the Butchulla language. You'll see both names used; they are the same place.

Do I need a 4WD to visit K'gari?

Yes — there are no sealed roads, so all travel is on sand. Either join a guided or tag-along 4WD tour (recommended for most travellers) or hire a self-drive 4WD with a vehicle permit. Standard 2WD cars cannot access the island.

When is the best time to visit K'gari?
