Plan Your Whitsundays Trip
When to go
The Whitsundays sail year-round, but August to October is the sweet spot — warm, dry, lighter winds and humpback whales passing offshore (roughly July–September). November to May is the tropical summer: hotter, more humid and marine stinger season, so you sail in a supplied stinger suit. Trade winds are usually strongest around June–July, which makes for exciting sailing but a bumpier ride — pick a catamaran if you are worried about seasickness.
How long to stay
A day tour (sailing catamaran or Ocean Rafting) covers Whitehaven Beach and a snorkel stop if you are short on time. A 2-day / 2-night trip is the classic Whitsundays experience — you sleep aboard, sail more of the islands and get more snorkelling. A 3-day / 2-night trip is the pick when you can spare it, reaching quieter reefs and more beach time at a relaxed pace.
Getting there
Airlie Beach is the launch point for almost every trip. Fly into Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine, PPP) — about a 40-minute transfer — or Hamilton Island (HTI) and catch a ferry across. By land, Airlie Beach is a standard stop on the Greyhound East Coast bus route between Brisbane and Cairns. Boats depart from Port of Airlie and Coral Sea Marina, both a short walk or transfer from town.
Getting around
You do not need a car — everything happens on the water and Airlie Beach itself is walkable. Tours include the sailing, snorkel gear and stinger suits; overnight trips include meals and a bunk aboard. Just get yourself to Airlie Beach and check in at the marina.
Where to stay
Overnight sailing trips sleep you aboard the boat, all included. Bookend your trip in Airlie Beach, which has hostels, holiday parks, apartments and resorts a short walk from the marina and the free waterfront lagoon. Book a night before an early-morning departure so you are not rushing.

Dundee Local Tip
Heart Reef is protected, so you can only see it from the air, not the water — if that iconic shot is on your list, add a 60-minute scenic flight rather than expecting to snorkel it. For overnight trips, pick a catamaran over a maxi yacht if you are prone to seasickness (they are far more stable), and book the earliest departure you can in the Aug–Oct peak, as the best boats sell out first. Where do Whitsundays sailing tours depart from?
Almost all Whitsundays trips depart from Airlie Beach, from either Port of Airlie or Coral Sea Marina. Get yourself to Airlie Beach — by air via Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) or Hamilton Island, or by Greyhound bus — and the boats leave from the marina in town.
Is a day trip or an overnight sailing trip better?
A day trip is perfect if you are short on time and still want Whitehaven Beach and a snorkel. An overnight 2-day/2-night or 3-day trip is the classic Whitsundays experience — you sleep aboard, sail more of the islands and get much more snorkelling and beach time. If you can spare the days, go overnight.
When is the best time to sail the Whitsundays?

Will I get seasick sailing the Whitsundays?
It depends on the boat and conditions. Catamarans are much more stable than maxi yachts and are the better choice if you are prone to seasickness. The islands also shelter much of the water, so it is usually calmer than open ocean. Take motion-sickness tablets before you board if you are unsure.
Can you swim at Heart Reef?
No — Heart Reef is a protected coral formation you can only view from the air. Add a scenic flight or helicopter tour to see it. You can, however, snorkel plenty of other vibrant fringing reefs on every sailing trip.
