The Northern Territory is also home to some of Australia's most significant Aboriginal cultural sites. Our tours include visits to rock art galleries and cultural centres where local Aboriginal guides share stories of the Dreamtime and explain the deep spiritual connection between the land and its traditional custodians.
Best time to visit: The dry season (May to October) offers the best weather for the Top End, with warm days, cool nights, and accessible waterfalls. The wet season (November to April) brings dramatic storms and lush green landscapes but some areas become inaccessible.
Kakadu National Park is the jewel of the Top End. Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres, it's the largest national park in Australia and one of only a handful of places in the world that holds both World Heritage natural and cultural listings. The rock art galleries at Ubirr and Nourlangie showcase some of the oldest and most complex art galleries on Earth, with paintings that record Aboriginal life over tens of thousands of years.
Litchfield National Park, about 90 minutes south of Darwin, is a favourite for swimming. Florence Falls plunges into a deep pool surrounded by monsoon rainforest — swimming under the falls is an experience you'll never forget. Wangi Falls, Buley Rockhole, and Tolmer Falls offer equally stunning swimming spots, each with its own character. The park is also home to towering magnetic termite mounds that have fascinated scientists for decades.
Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) is a series of thirteen gorges carved through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River. Canoeing or cruising through the towering gorge walls as the morning light turns the rock face amber and gold is one of the great natural experiences in Australia. Overnight canoe trips are available for more adventurous travellers.
Darwin itself is a fascinating multicultural city with exceptional food markets (the Mindil Beach Sunset Market is legendary), a vibrant waterfront precinct, and croc-spotting cruises on the Adelaide River. Most travellers spend at least one night in Darwin before heading out on their NT adventure.
For working holiday makers, the Northern Territory is a popular destination for regional work that counts toward second and third-year visa extensions. Many travellers combine a Top End tour with farm or hospitality work in the region, making it both an adventure and a practical part of their Australian journey.
