Outback Safaris

Explore the Red Centre & Australia's Wild Outback

About Outback Safaris

The Australian Outback is one of the last truly wild places on Earth. With landscapes that are 600 million years old, ancient Aboriginal culture stretching back 65,000 years, and a silence so profound it changes you — an outback safari is the experience that connects you to the real Australia.

Dundee Adventure's outback safari tours take you to the spiritual heart of the continent. Watch the sunrise paint Uluru in impossible shades of red and orange. Hike the rim of Kings Canyon through the "Garden of Eden." Learn about Dreamtime stories from Aboriginal guides. Sleep under a sky so full of stars it doesn't look real.

Our 3-day and 5-day outback tours depart from Alice Springs and cover Uluru, Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), Kings Canyon, and the MacDonnell Ranges. All tours include experienced guides, comfortable camping or lodge accommodation, meals, and national park fees.

The outback is a completely different experience to the coastal Australia most travellers see — and it's often the part of the trip that leaves the deepest impression.

Alice Springs is the gateway to the Red Centre and the starting point for most outback tours. The town itself is worth exploring — the Alice Springs Desert Park offers an excellent introduction to the desert ecosystem, and the MacDonnell Ranges that frame the town are home to stunning gorges, swimming holes, and walking trails that most travellers never discover.

The drive from Alice Springs to Uluru takes around four and a half hours through some of the most hauntingly beautiful landscape on the planet. Flat red earth stretching to the horizon in every direction, punctuated by desert oaks and the occasional wedge-tailed eagle circling overhead. It's a drive that puts everything into perspective.

Outback camping is a highlight in itself. Sleeping in a traditional swag under the stars is an authentically Australian experience that connects you to the land in a way that no hotel room ever could. On clear nights — and most nights are clear out here — the Milky Way is so vivid it casts shadows on the ground.

For travellers who prefer more comfort, lodge and resort accommodation options are available at Yulara (the resort town near Uluru) and at various stops along the way. Our team can match you with the accommodation level that suits your style.

The best time for outback safaris is between April and October, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and the nights are cool. Summer months (November to March) can see temperatures exceeding 40°C, though some operators run tours year-round with adjusted schedules to avoid the worst heat.

An outback safari with Dundee Adventure isn't just a tour — it's one of those transformative travel experiences that changes how you see the world. The vastness, the silence, the ancient connection to country — this is Australia at its most honest and raw.

Outback Safaris — Frequently Asked Questions

What is an outback safari like?
Outback safaris are multi-day 4WD adventures through Central Australia, taking in Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon, often camping in swags under the stars with meals cooked around the fire. They’re social, active and unforgettable.
Where do outback safaris depart from?
Most depart from Alice Springs, with some starting at Yulara near Uluru. Longer overland trips connect to Darwin, Adelaide or beyond.
What should I pack for an outback safari?
Bring sturdy walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, warm layers for cold desert nights and a sleeping bag if camping (many operators hire these). Fly nets are handy in the warmer months.
