What is K'gari?
K'gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) is the world's largest sand island, stretching 123 kilometres along Queensland's coast. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Australia's most iconic natural wonders. The island was renamed from Fraser Island to K'gari in 2023 to honour its Butchulla Aboriginal heritage ā K'gari means 'paradise' in the Butchulla language, and once you visit, you'll understand why.
The island is famous for its unique ecology ā ancient rainforests growing from sand, over 100 freshwater lakes, wild dingoes, and 75 Mile Beach which doubles as an actual highway. It's one of those places that genuinely lives up to the hype.
2-Day vs 3-Day Tour: Which to Choose?
Both options are fantastic, but here's how to decide:
**2-Day Tour ($449):** Perfect if you're short on time. You'll hit all the main highlights ā 75 Mile Beach drive, Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, the Maheno Shipwreck, and The Pinnacles. One night camping under the stars. Great value and action-packed.
**3-Day Tour ($599):** Our recommended option for the full experience. Everything in the 2-day plus Indian Head lookout, Champagne Pools, Lake Birrabeen, hidden swimming spots, and a sunset beach walk. The extra day gives you time to really soak in the island's magic without rushing. Two nights camping with stargazing experience included.
Both tours include 4WD vehicle, experienced guide, all meals, camping accommodation, and national park fees.
What to Pack
**Essential items:** ⢠Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+) ā the sand reflects UV intensely ⢠Reusable water bottle ā you'll drink 3-4 litres per day ⢠Swimwear (2 sets recommended) ⢠Hat and quality sunglasses ⢠Comfortable closed-toe shoes for forest walks ⢠Insect repellent (sandflies can be persistent at dusk) ⢠Camera with waterproof case or dry bag ⢠Light layers for cool evenings ⢠Sleeping bag (can hire on tour if needed)
**Leave behind:** Perfumes and scented products attract dingoes. Don't bring food outside of meal times ā dingo-safe food storage is provided.
Dingo Safety
K'gari is home to one of Australia's purest populations of wild dingoes ā beautiful but wild animals that must be respected. Your guide will give a thorough safety briefing, but key rules include:
⢠Never feed dingoes ā it's illegal and dangerous ⢠Walk in groups, especially at dawn and dusk ⢠Keep children within arm's reach at all times ⢠Secure all food and rubbish in dingo-proof containers ⢠If approached, stand tall, fold arms, and back away calmly
Dingo encounters are actually quite rare on tours, and when they do occur, they're usually at a safe distance. Our guides are trained in dingo management and will keep you safe.
Best Time to Visit
K'gari is a year-round destination, but conditions vary:
⢠**Best overall (Aug-Oct):** Warm days (22-27°C), cool nights, dry conditions for 4WD, plus humpback whale watching from the island ⢠**Peak season (Sep-Jan):** Busiest period with highest demand ā book early ⢠**Wet season (Jan-Mar):** Some tracks may close, but fewer crowds and lush green landscapes ⢠**Winter (Jun-Aug):** Cooler but pleasant. Perfect hiking weather and great value
