Skydiving in Australia: Where to Jump & What It Costs

A tandem skydive is the easiest way to jump — no experience or training needed. You are harnessed to a licensed instructor who handles the exit, freefall and parachute, so all you do is enjoy the ride. After a short briefing you board a light aircraft, climb to your jump altitude, and freefall for anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds depending on the height before the canopy opens for a five-minute glide back to earth.

The number that matters most is the exit altitude. A jump from 15,000ft gives you the longest freefall (around 60 seconds); 13,000ft is a great mid-range option; 8,000 ft to 10,000ft is a shorter, cheaper taste. Higher means more freefall, not a longer overall experience.

Tropical North Queensland is the most scenic place in the country to jump. A Cairns 15,000ft tandem from around $349 puts the Great Barrier Reef, the rainforest and the coastline all in one view during freefall. The east-coast backpacker route is dotted with brilliant drop zones. Airlie Beach overlooks the Whitsundays — you can jump from 8,000ft (from around $309) or 15,000ft (from around $369) with the 74 islands and Whitehaven Beach spread out below. Byron Bay offers a 15,000ft jump from around $379 over the most easterly point of Australia, and Noosa has a 13,000ft option from around $299 down the Sunshine Coast.

These three are the classic "do it while you are travelling the coast" jumps, and they slot neatly into an east-coast itinerary between Sydney and Cairns.

You do not have to be up north to jump. Around Sydney, tandem skydives over Wollongong and Newcastle beaches run from around $349 to $399 for a 15,000ft exit, with the city skyline and coastline in view on a clear day. Over in Western Australia, a jump over Rottnest Island is one of the most spectacular anywhere — from around $499 for 10,000ft up to $599 for 15,000ft — with turquoise water and the island's beaches below.

Wherever you jump, prices move with altitude and location, and weekend or peak-season slots book out first.

A few simple rules make the decision easy:

• Want the longest freefall? Choose 15,000ft. • Want the best view? Mission Beach, Airlie Beach and Rottnest Island are hard to beat. • On a budget or nervous? A lower-altitude jump (8,000–10,000ft) is cheaper and still a genuine skydive. • Want photos? Add the handcam or video package at booking — you cannot bring your own camera on a tandem jump.

Weight limits (usually around 95–100kg) and minimum-age rules apply at every drop zone, so check the fine print before you book if that might affect you.

Always book the earliest morning slot available. Winds are calmest first thing, which means the smoothest jump and the lowest chance of a weather hold. As the day heats up, thermals and afternoon sea breezes build, and that is when jumps most often get delayed or pushed to the next day.

If your schedule allows, avoid booking your skydive for your very last day in a town. Weather cancellations are common and completely outside the operator's control — leaving a spare day means you can be rebooked instead of missing out entirely.
