When to go
June to October is the sweet spot — dry, mild, clear water and best visibility, plus it's outside the stinger (jellyfish) season. November to May is warmer and greener but is stinger season, when boats provide protective suits. Coral spawning happens around November.
How long to stay
A full day on the outer reef is the classic and enough to snorkel or do an intro dive. Give yourself 2-3 days in Cairns or Port Douglas to combine a reef day with the Daintree Rainforest or a second reef trip.
Getting there
Fly into Cairns, the main hub, with Port Douglas about an hour north. For the southern reef and islands, fly into Airlie Beach (Proserpine) or Hamilton Island. Reef boats depart from the marinas in each town.
Getting around
Reef trips are all-inclusive boat days from the marina, so you just need to get to the departure town. In Cairns and Port Douglas most tours offer hotel pick-ups.
Where to stay
Cairns has the widest range from backpacker hostels to resorts and is the easiest base. Port Douglas is more relaxed and upmarket. Airlie Beach is the base for the southern reef and Whitsundays.

What to Pack for a Reef Day
- Swimmers worn under your clothes for a quick start
- Reef-safe sunscreen (regular sunscreen harms coral)
- A towel and a change of clothes
- Seasickness tablets if you're prone — take them before boarding
- An underwater camera or GoPro
- A light jacket for the boat ride back
