When to go
June to October (the dry season) is the most comfortable — warm, low humidity, clear reef water and outside stinger season. November to May is the wet season: hot, humid, greener rainforest and bigger rivers for rafting, with stinger suits provided on reef trips.
How long to stay
Give Cairns 3-4 days to do it justice — a reef day, a rainforest or Kuranda day, and an adventure like rafting or skydiving, with a spare day for a second reef trip.
Getting there
Fly into Cairns Airport, well connected to all major cities. It's about 10 minutes from the city centre and the reef marinas.
Getting around
The Esplanade and city are walkable, and most tours offer hotel pick-ups. For the Daintree, Kuranda and rafting, a guided tour handles the transfers and the long drives.
Where to stay
Cairns has everything from party hostels to waterfront resorts. Stay near the Esplanade and its lagoon (Cairns has no city beach) for the best access to tours and nightlife.
