Philip Island

Phillip Island lies about 140 kilometres south-east of Melbourne — roughly 90 minutes by road — and is one of Victoria's best-loved wildlife destinations. Connected to the mainland by a bridge, this compact island packs in penguins, seals, koalas, dramatic coastline, and world-class motorsport, making it a perfect day trip or overnight escape from the city.

The island's most famous attraction is the Penguin Parade at Summerland Beach. Every evening at sunset, hundreds of little penguins — the smallest penguin species in the world, standing just 33 centimetres tall — emerge from the sea and waddle up the beach to their burrows in the dunes. Viewing platforms and boardwalks let you watch this nightly ritual up close, and it's a genuinely magical experience that happens 365 days a year.

At The Nobbies, on the island's south-western tip, a network of boardwalks leads along rugged clifftops with sweeping ocean views. Just offshore lies Seal Rocks, home to one of Australia's largest colonies of fur seals — many thousands of animals at peak season. The Nobbies Centre has underwater cameras and telescopes for a closer look.

The Koala Conservation Reserve gives you the chance to see koalas in a natural bushland setting from elevated treetop boardwalks, often just an arm's length away as they doze in the eucalypts. Churchill Island, a small heritage farm connected by bridge, offers a glimpse of colonial-era rural life with working farm demonstrations.

Phillip Island is also famous for motorsport. The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit hosts the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and other major events, and on non-race days you can take a guided track tour or hot laps. The island's beaches are excellent too — Cape Woolamai is a popular surf beach with a scenic coastal walk to the island's highest point.

The wildlife extends beyond the headline attractions. Wallabies, echidnas, and a huge variety of birdlife are common across the island, and the surrounding waters are home to dolphins and, seasonally, migrating whales. The whole island has a relaxed, coastal-holiday feel that contrasts nicely with the buzz of Melbourne.
