Travel Insurance for Australia: Why You Really Need It

Dundee Adventure Team 7 min read Updated 2026-08-01

Australia is safe, but medical bills, cancelled tours and stolen gear are not. Here's an honest, no-nonsense rundown of why travel insurance matters and what to look for.

Do You Actually Need It?

Short answer: yes. Australia is a safe, well-run country, but it is also enormous, remote in places, and expensive when things go wrong. A twisted ankle on a hike, a stolen phone in a hostel, a cyclone that cancels your flights, or a campervan bingle can all turn into serious money fast.

Travel insurance is one of those things you resent paying for right up until the moment you desperately need it. For a trip that might cost you thousands in flights, tours, and time, a few dollars a day of cover is a no-brainer.

The Healthcare Reality

Australia does not offer free public healthcare to most visitors. If you are on a tourist or working holiday visa and you end up in hospital, you are generally liable for the bill — and those bills can be eye-watering, especially if you need an ambulance (which is not free in most states) or a medical evacuation from somewhere remote.

There is one important nuance: Australia has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements (RHCA) with a number of countries, including the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and several European nations. If you are from one of these countries, the RHCA covers some medically necessary public treatment while you are visiting. But — and this is the big but — it does NOT cover ambulances, repatriation home, non-emergency care, or anything to do with your belongings or trip. It is a safety net, not a substitute for insurance.

What Good Cover Should Include

When comparing policies, look past the headline price and check what is actually covered:

Medical & emergency — hospital, doctors, ambulance, and crucially, emergency evacuation and repatriation.

Trip cancellation & disruption — refunds if you have to cancel, or if flights, tours, or accommodation fall through (including if an operator goes bust).

Baggage & valuables — cover for stolen or damaged luggage, phones, cameras, and laptops, with a per-item limit high enough to actually cover your gear.

Rental vehicle excess — if you are hiring a campervan or car, excess reduction cover can save you a fortune versus buying it from the rental desk.

The Adventure-Activity Trap

This is the one that catches backpackers out. Standard travel insurance often excludes 'adventure activities' — and in Australia you will almost certainly do some. Skydiving, scuba diving, bungee jumping, quad biking, surfing, and even some hikes can be excluded unless you add an adventure or high-risk activities pack.

Before you buy, make a list of everything you might realistically do — reef dives, a skydive over Mission Beach, a 4WD tour on K'gari — and check each one is covered. It is usually a cheap add-on, and it is a lot cheaper than an uninsured hospital stay.

Popular Providers & How to Choose

Backpackers commonly use providers like World Nomads (built around adventurous, long-term travellers and easy to extend on the road), Cover-More, and Allianz, among others. We are not tied to any of them and we do not sell insurance — so shop around, read the product disclosure statement, and compare the cover, not just the price.

A few tips: buy your policy when you book your trip (not the night before you fly, so cancellation cover kicks in early), keep digital and paper copies of your policy number and the emergency line, and photograph your valuables and receipts in case you ever need to claim.

Get Your Trip Sorted First

Insurance is the boring-but-essential layer on top of a great trip. Once you know what tours and adventures you are doing, it is easy to insure them properly. If you have not locked in your itinerary yet, we are happy to help you build one — then you will know exactly what activities to make sure your policy covers.
