Brisbane gets a bad rap from travellers who fly in, spend one night, and bolt to the Gold Coast or Noosa. That is a mistake. Queensland's capital has transformed in the last few years into a genuinely exciting city with world-class dining along Howard Smith Wharves, free outdoor adventures along the Brisbane River, and a local scene that is way more relaxed than Sydney or Melbourne.

The city is also gearing up for the 2032 Olympics, which means new parklands, upgraded transport, and a buzz of investment. For backpackers, Brisbane is the best-value capital city in eastern Australia — cheaper accommodation, cheaper food, and equally good weather.

South Bank Parklands & Streets Beach — A free man-made beach and lagoon right in the city centre, surrounded by gardens, BBQs, and restaurants. Perfect for a lazy afternoon.

City Botanic Gardens — Beautiful riverside gardens in the CBD. Free entry, great for a morning run or picnic.

Kangaroo Point Cliffs — Walk along the cliff-top boardwalk for stunning city views, or book an abseiling session down the cliffs.

Mount Coot-tha Lookout — A short bus ride from the city. Panoramic views of Brisbane and all the way to Moreton Bay. Free entry, and there is a botanic garden at the base.

New Farm Park — Riverside park in the trendy New Farm neighbourhood, with a farmers market on Saturdays and easy access to the Howard Smith Wharves.

Story Bridge Adventure Climb — Not free, but an unforgettable experience — climb to the top of Brisbane's most iconic bridge at sunset.

Brisbane is a brilliant base for day trips:

North Stradbroke Island — A short ferry ride from Cleveland, with incredible beaches, snorkelling, and whale watching (June to November).

Moreton Island — Snorkelling around the Tangalooma Wrecks, sandboarding, and kayaking with dolphins.

Gold Coast Hinterland — Springbrook National Park and Lamington National Park are about ninety minutes south, with waterfalls, glow-worm caves, and ancient rainforest walks.

Australia Zoo — Steve Irwin's famous wildlife park, about an hour north on the Sunshine Coast. A full day of croc shows, animal encounters, and conservation.

Noosa — Two hours north, Noosa is one of Queensland's most beautiful coastal towns. National park walks, Hastings Street cafes, and river kayaking.

Backpacker Accommodation: Brisbane has a solid hostel scene concentrated in Fortitude Valley and the CBD. YHA Brisbane City is central and modern. Bunk Brisbane in the Valley is social and close to nightlife. Expect $28–40 AUD per night for a dorm bed.

Where to Eat (on a budget): • Eat Street Northshore — A shipping-container food market on the river with cuisines from around the world. Open Friday and Saturday nights. • West End — Brisbane's multicultural heart. Boundary Street has cheap Thai, Vietnamese, Greek, and Ethiopian food. • Howard Smith Wharves — Stunning riverside dining under the Story Bridge. Not the cheapest, but worth one splurge meal. • Woolworths & Aldi — The backpacker essentials. Cook in your hostel kitchen and save a fortune.
