Sri Lanka
Tea plantations, temples & beaches
About Sri Lanka
A compact island packed with ancient temples, lush tea plantations, incredible train rides, wildlife safaris, and stunning beaches. Sri Lanka punches well above its weight.
Sri Lanka is the compact jewel of South Asia — an island roughly the size of Tasmania that packs in an incredible amount of diversity. Ancient Buddhist temples, lush tea plantations, wildlife safaris, pristine beaches, and one of the world's most scenic train rides all fit into a surprisingly small space.
The Cultural Triangle in the centre includes the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the Dambulla cave temples, and the iconic Sigiriya rock fortress. The hill country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya offers stunning tea plantation scenery and the famous blue train journey.
The south coast from Galle to Mirissa serves up colonial fort towns, incredible surf, sea turtles, and some of the best whale watching in the world (blue whales from December to April). Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's answer to African safari — leopards, elephants, and incredible birdlife.
Sri Lanka is very affordable, easy to navigate, and incredibly welcoming. Direct flights from Melbourne make it more accessible than ever for Aussies.
