Perth is your starting point for exploring Western Australia — a vast, sparsely populated coastline that feels like a completely different country to the busy East Coast. The West Coast road trip is becoming increasingly popular with backpackers who want something more off-the-beaten-track, and Perth's campervan depots are well set up for it.

Heading south from Perth, the Margaret River wine region is about three hours down the coast. It's one of Australia's premier wine areas, with world-class surfing, ancient karri forests, and coastal caves. You can easily spend three to five days exploring the region before continuing further south to Albany and Esperance, where you'll find some of the whitest beaches in the country.
