Campervan Hire in Hobart — What You Need to Know

Hobart is the starting point for a Tasmanian road trip — and Tasmania is arguably the best state in Australia for campervan travel. The island is compact enough that you can circle the whole thing in two weeks, yet packed with enough national parks, coastal scenery, and quirky towns to keep you busy for much longer.

The must-do route from Hobart is east to Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay, consistently rated as one of the world's most beautiful beaches. The drive takes about two and a half hours, and the park has excellent camping facilities. From there, continue up the east coast through Bicheno (penguins at night), St Helens, and the Bay of Fires — a stretch of coastline with stunning orange-lichen-covered boulders and crystal-clear water.

Heading north from Hobart, Cradle Mountain is about four hours and is the crown jewel of Tasmania's wilderness. The Overland Track starts here, and even day walks around Dove Lake are spectacular. Launceston, in the north, is a great stopover with the Cataract Gorge right in the city.

South of Hobart, Port Arthur Historic Site is worth a day trip, and the Tasman Peninsula has dramatic sea cliffs and bushwalking trails. The Huon Valley and Bruny Island (accessible by ferry with your van) are also brilliant detours for food, wildlife, and wilderness.

Tasmania's campervan season is October to March, with peak demand over summer (December to February). Winter driving is possible but be prepared for cold temperatures, frost, and occasional snow in the highlands. Hobart's depots are centrally located and easy to access.
