The Gold Coast is a popular alternative pick-up point to Brisbane, putting you closer to the surf, the theme parks, and the stunning hinterland rainforests. If you're starting your East Coast adventure from here, you're already in one of Queensland's most exciting regions.

Heading south, Byron Bay is only about ninety minutes across the New South Wales border — one of the easiest and most rewarding short drives you can do in a campervan. Byron is a backpacker favourite for its surf breaks, markets, and laid-back atmosphere. Continue south along the coast and you can reach Sydney in about ten hours (or a very relaxed three to four days with stops).

Heading north from the Gold Coast, Brisbane is about an hour's drive, and from there the full East Coast route continues to the Sunshine Coast, K'gari (Fraser Island), Airlie Beach, the Whitsundays, and Cairns. The Gold Coast Hinterland — including Springbrook National Park, Lamington National Park, and Tamborine Mountain — offers ancient rainforests, waterfalls, and glow-worm caves just thirty to forty-five minutes from the coast.

The Gold Coast has fewer campervan depots than Brisbane, but several major brands have pick-up and drop-off points here. One-way hires to Sydney, Brisbane, or Cairns are available. Peak season on the Gold Coast is the Australian winter (June to August), when interstate visitors flock north for the warmer weather.
