Cairns is the tropical gateway to Far North Queensland and the end point (or starting point) of the classic East Coast road trip. If you're picking up a campervan here, you're right in the heart of some of Australia's most incredible natural attractions — the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, and the Atherton Tablelands.

Heading north from Cairns, the road to Cape Tribulation takes you through the ancient Daintree Rainforest, where the rainforest meets the reef. This is one of the most unique drives in Australia and can be done as a day trip or an overnight adventure. Note that some campervan rental agreements restrict driving on unsealed roads beyond Cape Tribulation, so check your vehicle terms before heading further north.

South of Cairns, the coastal drive to Townsville and Magnetic Island (about four hours) is a popular short trip. Continue further south and you'll reach Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, one of Queensland's absolute highlights. The full Cairns-to-Brisbane run covers the entire East Coast and is one of the most popular one-way campervan routes in the country.

Inland from Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands offer a cooler climate, stunning waterfalls (Millaa Millaa, Josephine Falls, Babinda Boulders), volcanic crater lakes, and some of Queensland's best free camping spots. It's a great detour that most travellers don't expect.

Cairns has several campervan depots in the city and near the airport. The dry season (May to October) is peak time for Cairns — warm days, minimal rain, and perfect conditions for reef trips and outdoor adventures. Wet season (November to April) sees lower rental prices but some roads and attractions may have restricted access.
